Monday, October 5 — Today’s Environmental Tarot: The Empress

- A generous table, less food wasted

There may already be half a carrot and an unopened pack of tofu in the fridge when we add the same ingredients to our shopping basket. A plentiful meal can bring comfort, yet some of it may remain uneaten.

Today, The Empress, a symbol of abundance and care, invites us to value food throughout its journey to the table.

Food waste is an environmental issue that households can help address. UNEP’s Food Waste Index Report 2024 estimated that retail, food service and households generated approximately 1.05 billion tonnes of food waste in 2022. Households accounted for about 60% of that total. These estimates include both edible food and inedible parts, such as peels.

Start by checking the fridge before shopping. Identify ingredients that need to be used first, plan a meal or two around them, and list only what is missing. When considering a special offer, think about how much you will actually use.

UNEP recommends meal planning and shopping lists as practical ways to reduce food waste.

At the table, serve a manageable portion and take more if needed. Remaining ingredients can become part of another meal: vegetables can go into fried rice or soup, for example. Adjusting cooking quantities and using leftovers in an upcoming meal are also among UNEP’s recommendations.

Today’s action: choose one ingredient in your fridge that needs to be used soon and build a meal around it. The Empress’s abundance becomes a table where food is shared thoughtfully and put to good use.

*This ESG campaign reinterprets traditional tarot symbols as messages connecting global environmental protection with everyday action.
